Member Support ~ Linux Admin User Guide ~ Unix/Linux Primer

This section briefly covers the most popular UNIX/Linux commands and gets you familiar with the UNIX/Linux file system. Hopefully by this point you have secured yourself a Telnet client and have logged into your Server.

After you log on to the system you will be in your root directory. Your root directory holds your other directories and has the same name as your loginID.

Some helpful hints:
  • UNIX is case sensitive, as a rule of thumb try to use lower case for file
    names and directories.
  • If at any time you are unsure of a command, at the prompt, type:
    man command.
  • Control + c will break the current command. This is very important. If
you start a command and the machine appears to hang, you can hit
control + c to stop the action.
